Pieksämäki Old Church and bell tower Pieksämäki Old Church designed by August Sorsa was completed in 1753. The church is one of Eastern Finland's oldest preserved wooden churches. The church is the pearl of northern Orthodox archi- tecture which has attracted pilgrims and tourists to it in the past few years. During the summer months, the church is open every week from Thursday to Sunday, at other times during church services and for groups upon agreement. During the summer, the church café's own freshly baked products can be enjoyed while admiring the stunning church and nature views. The café also sells the organic honey from the church’s A wooden cross church built in the 1700s, which has an altarpiece that is the work of known Savo artist Pekka Halonen. Tapuli Café operates in the bell tower during the summer, and it also has a small church museum. The neoclassical church has 2200 seats, and the two-part altarpiece was painted by Samuel Elmgren. Leppävirta Church is famous for its brightness and good acous- tics.
